Mia Mala McDonald

Photographer

Mia Mala McDonald is a Melbourne (Naarm) based lifestyle, commercial and editorial photographer. People and play are at the essence of Mia’s work - she’s known for getting even the toughest subjects to walk off from set with a smile, and underpins this with a strong use of colour, form and nuanced attention to detail.

It’s this combination of personality and practicality that has lead to work with a diverse set of clients including the New York Times Magazine, Allen and Unwin Publishers, The Monthly, City Of Melbourne, RACV, Courtney Barnett, Victorian Tourism, Australian Olympic Committee, Deakin University, Chunky Move and ABC

Mia won the 2021 Martin Kantor Portrait Prize with her image of AFLW star Darcy Vescio, and has been a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait prize, Olive Cotton Award, the Bowness Photography Prize, the Iris Award, and the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award 2022.

In December 2022 Mia will publish her debut photobook, 'Rainbow Portraits', a tender documentation of Australia’s many Rainbow Families.
